Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser is an effective, penetrating monochromatic and polarized light that has been proven to be effective for cellular regeneration. Low level laser penetrates deeply due to a coherent light force which consists of photons all traveling in the same direction and at the same wavelength to restore abnormal cellular function. The laser stimulates ATP production, increases collagen synthesis, stimulation of DNA formation, increases neurotransmitters (serotonin), increases tissue regeneration to accelerate muscle, nerve, cartilage, bone and scar healing. Over 1,500 published studies have confirmed the efficacy of low-level laser therapy.

Patient Benefits

  • Reduces pain and inflammation

Trigger Point Therapy

Using the hands, the skin is gently pressed, to locate underlying tight bands or nodules of muscle fibers. Then using the hand, fingers, elbow or small hand instrument, the muscle is compressed with sustained pressure to relax it.

Trigger Point Therapy reduces spasms and relaxes muscles.

Patient Benefits

  • Reduces chronic muscle spasms
  • Avoids scar tissue formation
  • Improves muscle tone
  • Promotes better circulation
  • Increases range of motion

Surface EMG

Surface EMG (Electromyography) is a device for measuring extremely small amounts of electricity generated by muscles below the surface of the skin.

Abnormal muscle activity may show where treatment is needed.

Patient Benefits

  • Safe and non-intrusive procedure
  • Shows location of muscle spasm
  • Visual display is easy to understand
  • Documents severity of condition
  • Records effectiveness of treatment

Massage Therapy

Massage can relieve tension in your muscles and help your body to release natural painkillers and promote your bodies own natural healing ability. Deep tissue massage is used to focus on a specific problem, such as: Chronic Pain, Limited mobility, Recovery from injuries, Repetitive strain injury, Postural problems, Osteoarthritis pain, Fibromyalgia and Muscle tension or spasm.

Patient Benefits

  • Boost the immune system

Consult your doctor before the self-administration of any therapy.

Patient Benefits

  • Helps increase circulation
  • Relaxes muscle tension
  • Reduces joint stiffness
  • Prepare tissues for rehabilitation
  • Widely available and inexpensive

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is an ancient East Asian technique used primarily for muscle relaxation, to break up adhesions in muscle tissue and to promote proper blood flow. Gua Sha facilitates various blunt-edge tools that are used to stroke the treated area. The technique is quite comfortable and provides much relief to patients with muscular aches and pains. Notable, profound relief can be found from using Gua Sha after sport-related muscular distress, (i.e. muscular sprains/strains by marathon runners, swimmers, bikers and triathletes, amongst many others).

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a soft tissue technique in which a force is applied to a musculoskeletal structure to release or stretch the underlying fascia and to mobilize any adhesions. Fascia is a thin layer of connective tissue that covers and supports a muscle. Myofascial Release aims to release skeletal muscle tissue shortness and tightness with a safe, low load stretch on the underlying structures to release fascial tightness and myofascial pain.

Traction

Cervical traction is a technique to provide pain relief and improved motion in the neck. Traction gently distracts the neck and opens the space between the cervical vertebrae, which alleviates the pressure on the affected discs and nerve roots or irritated spinal joints. Between the bones of your spine are intervertebral discs which act as shock absorbers. When a disc injury occurs, a disc can bulge and put pressure on a nerve within the spine. Cervical traction is extremely effective at taking the pressure off this injury and assists in having the disc retract and heal properly. As well, cervical traction is very beneficial for patients with arthritis and degenerative disc disease, as it assists in promoting mobility and hydrating the discs.

Flexion Distraction

Flexion Distraction are chiropractic services that use a therapeutic manipulation and mobilization techniques that provide traction to the lumbar spine. This is an advanced, traction based therapy commonly used to treat disc injuries and arthritic conditions. Flexion Distraction uses a specialized table that gentle cycles in a process of distraction to stretches the spine and also flexion of the spine to widen the space of the spinal canal, reduce the pressure on spinal nerves, discs and the spinal cord, and to promote and restore proper spinal mobility. The gentle pumping rhythm of distraction and flexion causes a vacuum effect on the spinal discs, causing injured discs to become hydrated and resorb back to proper position to promote healing. This is a leading form of non-surgical management for disc injuries.

Infrared Light Therapy

Infrared light therapy consists of exposure to different wavelengths of polychromatic, polarized light. After the light photons are applied to the tissue, then the mitochondria of the cells absorb the light and synthesize ATP (adenosine troposphere) to increase DNA and protein synthesis within the cell. The therapeutic benefits of infrared light therapy are: increases circulation, increases the activity of the lymphatic system, increases collagen production to repair damaged tissue. By initiating the healing process, infrared light therapy helps the body overcome pain, inflammation and injury for faster repair of damaged tissue.

Kinesio Taping

Kinesio Tape is an advanced taping technology which supports overused muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia in an active and dynamic way allowing for motion. The tape actually increases and enhances muscle activity and improves function and performance. The dynamic method of taping allows for prevention of further injury and protects the tissue for healing, while allowing for muscle activity. The kinesio tape is made of a cotton-type of fabric with an acrylic adhesive base that is activated by friction post-application. Kinesio tape can potentially be worn for several days, due to the unique fabric that allows the tissue below to breathe. It provides mechanical support of the structure while also promoting optimal athletic performance. Dr. Tara Koff is proficient in various taping procedures to support injured muscles and joints. Kinesio taping is one of many taping procedures and chiropractic services that Dr. Koff employs.
